Maj. Gen. Jered Helwig

Major General Jered Helwig was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Transportation Corps branch detailed to Armor in 1994 after graduating from Wheaton College with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. Additionally, he has earned a Master of Science in Public Policy from Georgetown University and a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University (Eisenhower School). Major General Helwig is a graduate of the Armor Officer Basic Course, Scout Platoon Leaders Course, Combined Logistics Advanced Course, Command and General Staff College, National Defense University (Senior Service College), and Jumpmaster School.

Major General Helwig’s operational experience encompasses a career spent mostly in tactical units with two deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, one deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, one deployment in support of Operation Joint Guard in Bosnia and one deployment in support of Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti.

In 28 years of service, Major General Helwig’s assignments include: Platoon Leader and Troop Executive Officer in the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Polk Louisiana; Transportation Officer of the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vicenza, Italy; Company Commander of the 70th Transportation Company in Mannheim, Germany; Joint Chiefs of Staff intern at Office of the Secretary of Defense (Personnel and Readiness) in the Pentagon; Support Operations Plans Officer and Assistant Support Operations Officer for the 82nd Sustainment Brigade, S4 for the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, Battalion Executive Officer for the 407th Brigade Support Battalion in 2nd Brigade Combat Team 82nd Airborne Division, and Secretary of the General Staff for the 1st Theater Support Command all at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Battalion Commander of the 710th Brigade Support Battalion in 3rd Brigade Combat Team 10th Mountain Division (Spartans), G4 of the 10th Mountain Division in Fort Drum, New York; Combined Joint Task Force J4 of Regional Command (East) in Afghanistan; Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade (Providers), Fort Stewart, GA; Executive Officer to the Deputy Commanding General Army Materiel Command, Redstone Arsenal, AL; 30th Chief of Transportation (CoT) and Commandant of the United States Army Transportation School, United States Army Sustainment Center of Excellence, Fort Lee, Virginia; Director for Logistics and Engineering (J4) for United States Indo-Pacific Command, Camp Smith, Hawaii.

Major General Helwig’s awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star Medal with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with three
Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge.

Major General Helwig is married and they have two sons.
