Deputy Commanding General - Australia

     Major General McDaniel is the Deputy Commanding General (Australia) for the U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC), located at Fort Shafter, Hawaii.

     Major General Dan McDaniel graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps in 1989. He was selected for service with the Australian Special Air Service Regiment in 1994.

     Major General McDaniel has commanded at every level within Australian Special Operations Command. He commanded the Special Air Service Regiment in 2007/8, was the Deputy Commander/Chief of Staff of Special Operations Command in 2013, and was the Special Operations Commander from September 2013 to December 2014.

     He has served in operations and plans staff appointments in various operational and strategic level Australian Headquarters including Army Headquarters, Joint Operations Command, Forces Command and Special Operations Command. He was most recently the Director General Capability Investment Analysis in Australian Defence Headquarters and was promoted to Major General in November 2018.

     He has commanded on combat operations in East Timor and on three tours of Afghanistan. He commanded the first Australian Special Air Service Squadron deployed to Afghanistan in November 2001, the Australian Special Operations Task Group deployed in 2007 and was the Deputy Commander of NATO ISAF Special Operations Forces in 2009. He has served on non-operational exchanges with the British Army of the Rhine in 1993 and with United States Special Operations Forces in 1998.

     Major General McDaniel was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal in 2002, the Distinguished Service Cross in 2008, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2015. He is a graduate of the Australian Command and Staff College and the Australian Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies. He holds a Masters of Management from the University of Canberra and a Masters of Arts from Deakin University.

     He is married and together they have one son.
