FEBRUARY IN USARPAC HISTORY




1 - 1944 - Invasion of the Marshall Islands continues as Marines land on Roi and Namur Islands, and Army troops land on Kwajalein Island.

2 - 1944 - Roi and Namur Islands in the Marshall Islands are secured.

4-11 - 1945 - Yalta conference - The Allies consider the Russian entry into war against Japan more important than the strategic value of Poland or Chiang's China. 

5 - 1941- Gen. Walter Short arrives in Hawaii - Army responsible for defenses 

6 - 1943 - Guadalcanal declared secure. US casualties were 6,000 out of 60,000 including 1600 dead; Japan casualties 24,000 of 36,000.

7 - 1944 - Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands, is declared secured.

8 - 1942 - Japanese troops land at Gasmata, New Britain. Japanese land at Singapore Island.

8 - 1943 - Evacuation of over 11,000 Japanese troops from Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, is completed.

9 - 1943 - Organized resistance on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, ends.

11 - 1942 - United States troops arrive at Curacao and Aruba, Netherlands West Indies.

11 - 1951 - 3rd CCF attack pushed UN forces back to Han River

12 - 1944 - Marines land on Arno Atoll, Marshall Islands; this begins a series of "mopping-up" operations in minor atolls of the Marshall Islands.

14 - 1941 - Eugene Dooman delivers FDR ultimatum to Foreign Minister Ohashi in Tokyo. If Japan attacked Singapore, it would mean war with U.S.

14 - 1942 - Japanese paratroopers drop on Palembang, Sumatra.

15 - 1913 - The Army establishes the Hawaiian Department

15 - 1941 - Magic intercepts Ogawa's "shopping list" for spies in Hawaii but Pearl Harbor not informed

15 - 1942 - Singapore surrenders to the Japanese. Japanese forces land on Sumatra, Netherlands East Indies.

15 - 1944 - United States Third Amphibious Force lands New Zealand troops in the Green Islands off New Ireland.

17 - 1944 - Eniwetok landings 

17-18 - 1944 - TF58 air attack on Truk destroyed 250 planes, 15 warships, 137091 tons merchant shipping 

17 - 2002 - Main body of 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) deploys to Basilan Island, Philippines, for Phase I of Exercise Balikatan. 

18 - 1944 - Marines and Army forces land on Engebi Island, Eniwetok Atoll, in the Marshall Islands. 

19 - 1942 - Bali, Netherlands East Indies, is invaded by the Japanese. Battle of Badoeng Strait starts at night and continues the next day.

19 - 1944 - Marines and Army troops supported by naval bombardment land on Eniwetok Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands.

19 - 1945 - Marines land on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands.

20 - 1942 - Submarine SWORDFISH (SS-193) evacuates President Quezon and other Philippine officials from Luzon, Philippines Japanese invade Timor Island in the Netherlands East Indies.

21 - 1943 - Marines and Army troops occupy Russell Islands, Solomon Islands.

21 - 1951 - Matthew Ridgeway's "Killer" counterattack pushes CCF back to 38th line by April 21

22 - 1942 - FDR orders MacArthur to leave the Philippines.

22 - 1944 - Marines land on Perry Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands; this operation completes United States control of Eniwetok Atoll.

22 - 2002 - A U.S. Army special operations MH-47, employed with Exercise Balikatan, crashes at sea near Basilan with the loss of all ten personnel on board. 

23 - 1942 - Japanese submarine shells oil refinery at Ellwood, California

25 - 1921 - Hawaiian Division activated at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. This division was redesignated as the 24th Infantry Division in 1941.

27 - 1942 - Battle of Java Sea is fought.

28 - 1945 - Army troops are landed at Puerto Princesa, Palawan Island, Philippines, by naval attack group.

29 - 1944 - Destroyer task group lands Army troops on Los Negros Island, Admiralty Islands.


 

USARPAC MISSION

USARPAC postures and prepares the force for unified land operations, responds to threats, sustains and protects the force, and builds military relationships that develop partner defense capacity in order to contribute to a stable and secure U.S. Pacific Command area of responsibility.
