Balikatan 2012 is a Republic of the Philippines-U.S. bilateral military humanitarian assistance and training exercise held April 16-27 in the Philippines. The annual bilateral exercise involves U.S. military and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) personnel and subject matter experts from Philippine Civil Defense agencies. BK12 is the 28th iteration of the exercise. Approximately 4,450 U.S. personnel and 2,273 AFP personnel are participated in BK12.

"Balikatan" is a Tagalog term that means "shoulder-to-shoulder" and characterizes the spirit of the exercise, focusing on Philippine-U.S. partnership and mutual commitment to the mutual defense treaty. BK12 consisted of three simultaneous events.

Event one consisted of a series of humanitarian civic assistance (HCA) projects to improve Philippine-U.S. military civic assistance interoperability. During these events, AFP and U.S. personnel will conduct multiple medical, dental, veterinary, and engineering civic action projects in Palawan province.

Event two is a scenario-based command post exercise (CPX) at Camp Aguinaldo that included joint force planning and assistance required as part of a disaster relief scenario. The CPX will also established a multi-national coordination center with participants from countries in the region and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Event three involved cross-training and interoperability field training exercises (FTX) at Fort Magsaysay, Clark Air Base, Basa Air Base, Crow Valley and other AFP military installations in Luzon and Palawan. Maritime security and ship drills will be conducted off the coasts of Luzon and Palawan.
