5th Battlefield Coordination Detachment
Sergeant Major Patrick G. Murray enlisted in the Army as a Fire Support Specialist (13F) initially assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (AASLT). His subsequent assignments include the 1ST Armored Division serving as a Forward Observer, Combat Observation Laser Team Chief and Armored Company Fire Support Sergeant. His next assignment was back to the 101st where he served as a Company Fire Support NCO, and Battalion Fire Support Sergeant. SGM Murray then reported to the National Training Center where he served as a COLT Observer Controller (OC) with the Brigade trainers (Broncos). Following September 11, NTC played a critical role in the preparation of units deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as well as Operation Enduring Freedom. His next assignment was to 10th Mountain Division, where he served for seven years. His positions include Battalion Fire Support Sergeant, Rifle Platoon Sergeant, and two First Sergeant positions. In 2011, SGM Murray attended the United States Army Sergeant Majors Academy, Class 63. Upon completion of the academy, he received orders to report to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam as the 5th Battlefield Coordination Detachment (BCD) Operations Sergeant Major.
SGM Murray has held every leadership position from Forward Observer, Section Chief, Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant. He has held these positions during numerous deployments in support of Operations in both Bosnia and Iraq.
SGM Murray's awards and decorations include the Combat Action Badge, Bronze Star Medal (1 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (3 OLC), Air Medal, Army Achievement Medal (9 OLC), Air Assault, as well as several other awards in support of Bosnia, and OIF.
His military and civilian education includes every level of NCOES, numerous military schools and courses. SGM Murray is currently working on his Bachelor’s degree from Excelsior College.
As the senior liaison unit for the Commander, United States Army Forces (ARFOR) operating in the Pacific theater to the Joint Force Air Component Commander (JFACC) for the United States Pacific Command, the 5th BCD facilitates the integration of air power with ARFOR ground operations through the coordination of air support and the exchange of operational and intelligence information. The BCD ensures that the JFACC and 613th Air Operations Center (AOC), Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, are aware of the ARFOR Commander's intent, scheme of maneuver, and requirements for air support.
