COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR
Garfield D. Skyers
Command Sergeant Major Garfield D. Skyers was born in Jamaica. He enlisted in the United States Army in January 1984 and attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Bliss and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
Command Sergeant Major Skyers began his Army career as an Environmental Health Technician (Preventive Medicine) Specialist. CSM Skyers has served in numerous leadership positions.
Some of his assignments include Team Leader, JTF-Bravo, Honduras, Team Leader, 5th Preventive Medicine Unit, Yongsan, Korea, Detachment Sergeant, 224th Medical Detachment (Operation Desert Storm), NCOIC, Department of Preventive Medicine, Silas B. Hays Army Community Hospital, Ft Ord, CA, Detachment Sergeant, California Medical Detachment, Monterey, CA, Preventive Medicine NCOIC, 82nd Airborne Division, Ft Bragg, NC, 18th MEDCOM and USFK Senior Preventive Medicine NCO, Yongsan, Korea; First Sergeant, Company C, 782nd MSB (82nd Airborne Division), First Sergeant, HHD, 261th ASMB (Airborne), Ft Bragg, NC; and First Sergeant, HHC, TF Med Eagle, Bosnia Herzegovina, Sergeant Major, United States Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine – Europe; CSM, TF31 Medical, OIF 07-09, CSM, TF Medical West/Southwest, OEF, and CSM 31th CSH, Ft Bliss, TX. He is currently serving as the Command Sergeant Major for the 18th Medical Command (Deployment Support), Ft Shafter, Hawaii
Command Sergeant Major Skyers is a graduate of all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System and the Battle Staff and First Sergeant Courses and Command Sergeants Major Course. A graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Class 53, he also completed the Basic and Advanced Airborne School, Blueprint Reading Course, the Basic and Advanced Industrial Hygiene Course, Air Assault Course, Preventive Medicine Senior Leaders Course and the Jungle Expert Course. In addition, CSM Skyers has attended the United States Army-Europe Brigade/Battalion Commander/Command Sergeant Major Pre-Command Course. .
CSM Skyers civilian education include an Associate Degree, Monterey Peninsula Community College, Bachelor of Science, University of Maryland, Master in Business Administration and Master of Science Information Technology Management, Trident University International.
Command Sergeant Major Skyers awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army and Air Force Achievement Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal Good Conduct Medal, NATO Medal, numerous service ribbons, Expert Field Medical Badge, Air Assault Badge, Basic and Master Parachutist Badge, Australian, Russian, and Polish Parachutist Badge.
Command Sergeant Major Skyers is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit, the Order of Saint Barbara, and is a lifetime member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association and the Association of the United States Army.
Command Sergeant Major Skyers is married to the former Cheryl Brown and has been blessed with four beautiful children, Janessa, Kierston, Janelle and Kieron.
